The 2026-27 school year is officially underway across Metro Atlanta and North Georgia, with thousands of students returning to classrooms Monday as districts roll out new academic initiatives, updated safety measures, and stricter classroom policies.
Atlanta Public Schools (APS) welcomed students back with a milestone achievement: district leaders announced the system is fully staffed with no teacher vacancies heading into the new school year. Officials also highlighted continued investments in the district’s “Back to Basics 2030” strategic plan, including a new accelerated literacy program launching at four elementary schools to help improve reading skills.
Students across several Georgia school districts will also notice new restrictions on cellphone use. Under Georgia’s House Bill 1009, school systems must prohibit cellphone use during instructional hours for students in kindergarten through eighth grade. High schools are required to adopt similar policies by July 1, 2027. The law is designed to reduce classroom distractions and increase student engagement.
Ahead of the first day of classes, APS hosted its annual Back-to-School Bash, providing families with free school supplies, community resources, and information about after-school programs. District leaders say events like these help ensure students are prepared for a successful academic year before they step into the classroom.
As schools reopen throughout the region, motorists are reminded to slow down in school zones, watch for school buses, and remain alert during morning drop-off and afternoon dismissal times.
