The United States Men’s National Team’s memorable run in the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to an end Monday night after falling 4-1 to Belgium in the Round of 16 at Seattle Stadium. Belgium struck early with a goal in the opening 10 minutes, but the Americans responded when Malik Tillman buried an equalizer midway through the first half. The momentum was short-lived, however, as Belgium regained the lead just minutes later before adding two more goals in the second half to secure a convincing victory.
The loss ended what had been Team USA’s deepest World Cup run since advancing to the knockout stage. The match also marked the return of striker Folarin Balogun, whose suspension from the previous match against Bosnia and Herzegovina was overturned in time for the Round of 16. Despite creating opportunities, the U.S. struggled defensively against Belgium’s attack, while goalkeeper Matt Freese and the American back line were unable to slow the Red Devils’ offensive pressure.
Belgium now advances to the World Cup Quarterfinals, where it will face Spain in Los Angeles. Although the tournament ended in disappointment, the U.S. showed signs of growth throughout the competition and delivered one of its strongest World Cup performances in recent years, giving supporters optimism as the national team continues building toward future international competitions.
