Atlanta public safety leaders say they are fully preparing for the massive crowds and security demands expected during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as the city gets ready to host eight matches at Mercedes-Benz Stadium next summer. Officials told WSB-TV that multiple agencies, including the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Atlanta Police Department, federal authorities, and emergency management teams, are already coordinating security operations months ahead of the global event.
Authorities say Atlanta expects hundreds of thousands of visitors during the tournament, prompting large-scale emergency response drills and expanded security planning across the metro area. Roughly 150 first responders recently participated in mass-casualty training exercises designed to prepare for worst-case scenarios during the international event. Officials say the strategy includes intelligence sharing, crowd management, transit security, and enhanced technology throughout the city.
Mercedes-Benz Stadium will serve as one of the major U.S. host venues for the FIFA World Cup and is scheduled to host a semifinal match in addition to several group-stage games. City leaders say preparations extend far beyond the stadium itself, with MARTA upgrades, increased police staffing, and regional coordination already underway to ensure visitors and residents remain safe throughout the tournament.
