ATLANTA, GA — Residents and businesses across several Metro Atlanta communities are being urged to take precautions after a water supply interruption prompted officials to issue a boil water advisory.
The City of Atlanta Department of Watershed Management announced the advisory following a disruption affecting the Chattahoochee Water Treatment Plant on Sunday, October 11.
The affected communities include portions of Southwest Atlanta, South Fulton, Fairburn and Union City.
According to city officials, repair crews have completed work on a water main break near the treatment facility. However, the advisory remains in effect while officials monitor water pressure and conduct required water quality testing.
Residents who experienced water outages or low water pressure are advised to boil tap water before drinking, preparing meals, brushing their teeth or preparing infant formula.
Water should be brought to a rolling boil for at least one minute before being allowed to cool.
Bottled water is also recommended as an alternative while the advisory remains active.
Officials are encouraging extra caution for infants, older adults and individuals with weakened immune systems.
The advisory is precautionary and does not necessarily mean contamination has been confirmed. Water pressure disruptions can create conditions that increase the possibility of contaminants entering the system.
The Department of Watershed Management will continue monitoring the situation and announce when testing confirms that the advisory can safely be lifted.
Residents can follow official updates through the city’s watershed department website and social media channels.
