ALPHARETTA, GA — A massive redevelopment of North Point Mall that could eventually help bring an NHL franchise back to metro Atlanta has taken a major step forward after receiving approval from the Alpharetta City Council.
Following more than six hours of debate and public comments, council members voted 4-3 to approve zoning changesfor the roughly 100-acre property. The redevelopment would transform the aging mall site into a large mixed-use sports and entertainment district anchored by an approximately 20,000-seat arena capable of hosting NHL hockey.
Plans extend well beyond the arena. The proposed district includes a 4,000-seat music and performing arts venue, a 2,000-seat community hockey rink and practice facility, hotels, offices, restaurants, retail businesses and residential development. Plans also call for parks, plazas and trails throughout the property.
Developers hope the project could position Alpharetta as a potential home for an NHL expansion franchise. However, no NHL team has been awarded to Alpharetta or the Atlanta market, and the league has not committed to expanding at this time.
The proposal has generated significant debate in Alpharetta. Supporters see the redevelopment as an opportunity to revitalize North Point Mall, attract major entertainment events and generate new economic activity. Opponents have raised concerns about the project’s scale, particularly its residential component and the potential impact on traffic and the surrounding community.
The Alpharetta project is also not the only metro Atlanta development hoping to attract professional hockey. The Gathering at South Forsyth, located several miles north along Georgia 400, has its own plans for a large arena and mixed-use entertainment district designed with a potential NHL franchise in mind.
Atlanta has previously been home to two NHL franchises. The Atlanta Flames relocated to Calgary in 1980, while the Atlanta Thrashers moved to Winnipeg following the 2010-11 season.
While Tuesday’s approval does not guarantee the NHL’s return, it clears an important local hurdle for the North Point redevelopment and gives metro Atlanta another potential NHL-ready arena proposal should the league decide to expand.
For now, the race to potentially bring NHL hockey back to Georgia continues, with both Alpharetta and Forsyth County positioning themselves as possible destinations for a future franchise.
