ATLANTA, GA — Georgia’s race for governor is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched political contests of the 2026 midterm elections, with new polling showing a nearly even split between the two major candidates.
According to an Atlanta Journal-Constitution and University of Georgia poll released Tuesday, October 20, Republican candidate Rick Jackson holds 46% support among likely voters, while Democratic candidate and former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms follows closely with 45%.
Another 8% of voters remain undecided, leaving both campaigns with an opportunity to gain support before Election Day.
The tight numbers highlight Georgia’s competitive political environment, where voter participation in metro Atlanta and communities across the state could play an important role in determining the outcome.
Both candidates are seeking to connect with Georgians concerned about issues such as the economy, public safety, education, housing affordability and the state’s future direction.
Bottoms brings experience from her time leading Atlanta, while Jackson is campaigning as a Republican businessman seeking the state’s highest elected office.
With early voting underway, both campaigns are working to encourage supporters to cast their ballots ahead of the November 3 general election.
The outcome could have significant implications for Georgia residents, particularly in areas involving state spending, economic development, transportation and public education.
As Election Day approaches, undecided voters and turnout among key voting groups could ultimately determine who becomes Georgia’s next governor.
