Travel conditions at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport reached a breaking point this week, with security lines stretching outside the terminal and wait times climbing to extreme levels.
According to reports, some passengers waited four hours or more, while at least one traveler said they spent nearly nine hours in line trying to get through TSA.
The massive delays are being driven by a severe shortage of TSA workers, as many agents have called out amid the ongoing government shutdown, leaving checkpoints understaffed and overwhelmed.
In response to the crisis, federal officials deployed agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to assist at the airport. However, their role is limitedβthey are helping with crowd control and managing lines, not conducting security screenings.
Passengers reported chaotic scenes inside the airport, with lines wrapping through terminals and extending out the doors as thousands of travelers tried to catch flights. Despite the heavy congestion, airport officials say conditions improved slightly later in the day, with wait times dropping to under an hour in some cases.
The Department of Homeland Security confirmed that ICE agents are being sent to major airports experiencing the worst delays as part of a broader effort to ease congestion nationwide.
For now, travelers are being urged to arrive at least four hours early and prepare for long waits, as Atlantaβs airportβnormally known for efficiencyβcontinues to deal with one of its most severe operational disruptions in recent years.
