SANDY SPRINGS, GA — Drivers traveling along Georgia 400 are preparing for a major traffic change as construction continues on one of metro Atlanta’s largest transportation projects.
The Georgia Department of Transportation plans to close the existing Exit 5 on southbound Georgia 400 in Sandy Springs, replacing it with two temporary exits designed to keep motorists connected to nearby destinations.
Under the temporary configuration, Exit 5-B will provide access to the North Springs MARTA station, while Exit 5-A will take drivers toward Abernathy Road and Hammond Drive.
GDOT officials say the temporary setup could remain in place for as long as two years.
The change is necessary to provide construction crews with additional space to safely operate heavy equipment as work progresses along the Georgia 400 corridor.
The construction is part of the massive SR 400 Express Lanes project, which will add new express lanes in both directions along approximately 16 miles of the highway. The project stretches from the North Springs MARTA station in Fulton County north toward McFarland Parkway in Forsyth County.
The broader project is expected to significantly change how motorists travel along the busy corridor. Current plans call for two new express lanes in each direction in portions of the project area.
The overall public-private transportation project is valued at approximately $11 billion, with completion currently projected for 2031.
Drivers should also expect additional traffic shifts and construction-related changes over the next several years as crews continue working along Georgia 400.
Motorists traveling through Sandy Springs are encouraged to pay close attention to temporary highway signs. Navigation apps and GPS systems may not immediately reflect the new exit configuration once the changes take effect.
While the construction could create short-term headaches for commuters, transportation officials expect the finished express lane system to improve traffic flow and provide drivers with additional travel options along one of metro Atlanta’s busiest highways.
