The woman, whose husband murdered Emmett Till in 1955, admitted she lied to her testimony about Emmett sexually threatening her. Emmett Till was a 14 year old boy from Chicago went to Mississippi to visit family. Emmett Till’s story shocked the nation and shed light on racism in the 1950s. After being tortured, killed, and disfigured by two white men because he whistled at a white woman after buying bubble gum, later the two men were acquitted of killing Emmett Till.
Caroyln Bryant has lived in relative hiding for five decades because she’s haunted by her past. She now admitted that her testimony was a lie. Carolyn accused Emmett of grabbing and verbally abusing her. She claims she doesn’t remember anything else after that evening. But she’s happy the system changed and though the old system of white supremacy was wrong. Carolyn says she fells tender sorrow for Mamie Till Mobley, Emmett’s mother, who campaigned for civil rights until she died in 2003. After Emmett’s death, his mother insisted the funeral to be open casket ceremony so the world could see the result of racism. Carolyn said that losing her own son helped her understand and sympathize with the grief of Emmett’s mother had felt.
