Atlanta Restricts Right Turns on Red Ahead of FIFA World Cup 2026

0

Atlanta drivers will soon notice a major traffic change in some of the city’s busiest areas as officials expand restrictions on right turns at red lights. The initiative is part of Atlanta’s broader effort to improve pedestrian safety and prepare for the influx of visitors expected during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. New “No Turn on Red” signs are being installed throughout Downtown Atlanta, Midtown, and parts of Castleberry Hill, areas expected to see heavy foot traffic during the tournament.

The policy stems from an ordinance approved by the Atlanta City Council in 2024 that bans right turns on red at designated intersections. City leaders say the move is designed to reduce crashes involving pedestrians, cyclists, and scooter riders. Transportation officials point to studies showing that similar restrictions in other cities significantly reduced drivers failing to yield to people crossing the street. As Atlanta prepares to host fans from around the world, officials believe safer and more walkable streets are essential to the city’s World Cup readiness plan.

While some motorists have expressed concerns about potential traffic delays, supporters say the change aligns Atlanta with other major cities that prioritize pedestrian safety in high-density areas. The new signage is being rolled out now, and city officials are encouraging drivers to pay close attention to posted restrictions as enforcement increases. The effort is one of several transportation and infrastructure improvements being implemented ahead of the World Cup to help create a safer experience for residents and visitors alike.
