ATLANTA, GA — Metro Atlanta drivers are once again paying more at the pump, with the average price of regular gasoline climbing above $4 per gallon as higher crude oil prices and international instability continue to pressure fuel markets.
According to AAA’s latest Georgia fuel-price data, the Atlanta metro average for regular gasoline reached approximately $4.03 per gallon on September 14. That is up from about $3.91 one week earlier and $3.84 a month ago. The increase becomes even more noticeable when compared with last year, when Atlanta drivers were paying roughly $2.89 per gallon.
That means Atlanta’s current average is roughly $1.15 higher than it was one year ago, an increase of nearly 40%. A 15-gallon fill-up at the current metro average costs about $60.50, compared with roughly $43.30 at last year’s average.
The increase isn’t limited to Atlanta. Georgia’s statewide average has risen to approximately $4.02 per gallon, compared with $3.89 a week ago and $2.89 a year ago. Nationally, AAA reported an average of roughly $4.32 per gallon on September 14.
What’s Driving Prices Higher?
AAA says rising crude oil prices are a major factor. On September 10, the organization reported that the national gasoline average had jumped 13 cents in just one week as crude oil moved back into the $100-per-barrel range. AAA pointed to volatility surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy supplies, as a significant source of pressure on oil markets.
The latest increase is particularly unusual because gasoline prices often begin declining after the summer travel season. AAA reported that U.S. gasoline demand actually fell during the previous week, but higher oil costs were strong enough to push pump prices upward anyway.
Atlanta-area motorists are already adjusting their routines. WSB-TV recently reported that some metro residents have begun reducing unnecessary trips as regular gasoline at several Brookhaven stations approached $3.99 per gallon.
Prices had already been elevated heading into Labor Day. AAA reported Georgia’s statewide average at $3.89 per gallonduring the holiday weekend—11 cents higher than the previous week and 98 cents higher than a year earlier. The organization attributed that increase to a combination of expensive crude oil and strong holiday travel demand.
For now, Atlanta drivers could continue seeing fluctuations at local stations as oil markets react to global developments. With the metro average now above the $4 mark, fuel expenses are once again becoming a significant part of household transportation budgets across the region.
