Georgia Primary Election Recap: Major Races Set the Stage for November

0

Georgia voters headed to the polls Tuesday in one of the state’s most high-profile primary elections in recent years, setting the stage for several major statewide races ahead of November. From the governor’s race to key statewide offices, the election delivered major victories, surprise performances, and multiple runoffs.

Keisha Lance Bottoms Wins Democratic Governor Nomination

Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms officially secured the Democratic nomination for governor after defeating a crowded field of Democratic candidates. Bottoms entered the race as the frontrunner thanks to her statewide recognition, ties to Atlanta, and support from national Democratic leaders.

Her victory now sets up a major general election battle this fall as Democrats look to reclaim the Georgia governor’s office for the first time since the late 1990s.

Republican Governor Race Headed to Runoff

On the Republican side, no candidate earned enough votes to avoid a runoff. Trump-endorsed Lt. Gov. Burt Jones and businessman Rick Jackson advanced to the June runoff election after finishing ahead of Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and Attorney General Chris Carr.

Jackson’s late surge became one of the biggest stories of the night after reportedly spending tens of millions of dollars on campaign advertising.

U.S. Senate Race Also Going to Runoff

Georgia’s Republican Senate primary will also continue into a runoff after no candidate crossed the required 50% threshold. Congressman Mike Collins and former football coach Derek Dooley advanced to the next round and will compete for the opportunity to challenge Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff in November.

Key Down-Ballot Results

Several important statewide races were decided Tuesday night as well:

  • Georgia Supreme Court Justices Charlie Bethel and Sarah Warren successfully held onto their seats.
  • The Democratic lieutenant governor race will head to a runoff between Josh McLaurin and Nabilah Islam Parkes.
  • Republican voters selected Brian Strickland as their nominee for attorney general.
  • Fulton County Commission Chairman Robb Pitts was forced into a runoff after challenger Mo Ivory led the initial vote totals but failed to win outright.

Georgia Remains National Political Battleground

Political analysts across both parties are already calling Georgia one of the most important battleground states heading into the 2026 general election. With competitive races for governor, Senate, and several statewide offices, millions of dollars are expected to pour into Georgia over the next several months.

The next major election date will be the statewide runoff elections scheduled for June 16.
