Police pushing for weekend curfew after latest Camp Creek Marketplace shooting

Another shooting at the Camp Creek Marketplace on Saturday is causing police in East Point to push for a curfew.

Channel 2′s Lauren Adams spoke with police who had a message to share for parents.

East Point Police Major Shawn Buchanan said it’s been a problem for six months with hundreds of teens leaving the AMC theater and heading to Camp Creek Marketplace. “When you have 200 kids with nothing to do, they start being disruptive fights ensue and people with guns start shooting,” Buchanan said.

The latest shooting happened Saturday night when a pair of 15-year-olds and a 13-year-old were shot. Earlier this month, a 22-year-old woman was shot in the shoulder outside the AMC theater.

In August, an 11-year-old girl was struck in her back by a stray bullet behind the Longhorn Steakhouse. Her mother spoke to Channel 2 about the gun violence after the shooting.

Buchanan told Adams that he’s in talks with city hall to enact a city ordinance for a 6 p.m. curfew on the weekends. But for now, he has a strong message for parents.

“The marketplace isn’t hangout. It’s shopping. So don’t leave your kids unattended at marketplace,” he said.

Buchanan also said they are in talks with AMC Theater to change the rule that allows young people without parental supervision.
