Dennis McKinley stopped for a chicken sandwich while making a routine doctors visit at Emory Healthcare in Atlanta. For some reason, an Emory police officer had reason to assume he didn’t pay for his meal- which was only $4. Even though Dennis had his receipt, he found himself in handcuffs. He feels that he was being racially profiled and treated overly aggressive by the cops, which resulted in him being embarrassed and receiving unnecessary injuries.
Here’s what Dennis had to say about it:
“I had a receipt which could have easily ended her inquiry. There was a cashier that could have easily verified that I paid for everything I had. There were a number of easy resolutions that could have deescalated the unnecessary racial profiling and my detention by this officer.” Instead, “She chose to abuse her power. She chose aggression over common sense…She put her hands on her weapon, she put her hands on me, she publicly humiliated me, falsely and wrongfully accused me of stealing a sandwich and placed me in handcuffs so tight that she caused injuries to both of my wrists.”
He also added that the cop didn’t apologize for the incident once she found out he had in fact paid for his meal. Instead, she blamed Dennis for the entire situation. Dennis said he has retained counsel and will be taking legal actions in this matter.
