O.J. Simpson’s former prosecutor, Chris Darden has been receiving death threats to him and family ever since agreeing to represent Eric Holder, the suspected shooter in the Nipsey Hussle case. Before Eric Holder’s court hearing on Friday, Darden arrived early to the L.A. Supreme Court to file his motion to withdraw as Holder’s attorney. The judge approved his request and he left the courtroom before Holder arrived.
Darden later wrote on Facebook:
“After centuries of a history of black men hung from trees without trial, or after the thousands of cases of black men tried, convicted and executed without counsel … I cannot understand why in 2019 some people would deny a black man his 6th Amendment right to counsel of his choice,” Darden expressed to Facebook. “Or why defending such a man should invite threats not only against me but against my children too….Just as they were in 1995-Cowards never change. These days these cowards don’t send letters instead they sit anonymously behind keyboards threatening a man’s mother and children.”
Darden told reporters that he’s be been defending accusing criminals and gang members for over two decades. Although he’s no stranger to the backlash, this case, unfortunately, has been too much for him to handle. The case has been handed to Public Defender, Mearl Lottman, but before proceeding the court must first determine whether the public defender’s office has any conflicts of interest.
