HE’S ALSO CONTEMPLATING ELIMINATING JAIL TIME AS WELL! READ MORE BELOW!

Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed said Friday he is unsure whether he would sign city legislation that would eliminate jail time for smoking marijuana. The city council is considering a legislation that would lower fines for possessing marijuana to $75 and eliminate jail time. Currently, the legislation states that if caught with marijuana, the fine is $1,000 and up to six months in jail. Reed, who is nor for legalizing marijuana at all stated, “I’m following the debate very closely.” Mayor Kasim Reed believes that marijuana is a gateway drug and the punishment for possessing it “disproportionately affects brown people.”

According to theRacial Justice Action Center, between 2014 and 2016, 92 percent of people arrested in Atlanta for possessing marijuana were African-American.

“Making marijuana more easily available and penalizing it less sounds good if you have a traditional family structure,” Reed said. “It’s a different thing if you’re a single mom trying to raise a teenager.”
