A day of excitement at Six Flags Over Georgia turned tragic after a 42-year-old man died following an incident involving one of the amusement park’s most recognizable roller coasters.
The incident happened Monday, October 12, aboard Goliath, a towering roller coaster known for its steep drops and high speeds.
Authorities identified the victim as Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem, an Atlanta-area educator who worked in information technology at Wesley International Academy.
According to investigators and eyewitness accounts, Kariem was thrown from the roller coaster while it was operating. Four additional people were reported injured in connection with the incident.
Emergency responders arrived at the park, and authorities began investigating what caused the fatal accident.
The Georgia Office of the Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire is reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the ride’s safety systems and operating procedures.
Following the tragedy, Six Flags temporarily shut down nine similar roller coasters at several of its North American parks as a precaution.
The Goliath attraction at Six Flags Over Georgia remains closed while the investigation continues. Park officials have not announced a reopening date.
The incident has also raised broader questions about amusement park safety, particularly how rides are inspected and how passenger restraints are evaluated.
Friends and colleagues have remembered Kariem for his contributions to education and his dedication to students.
As investigators continue their work, the community is mourning a life lost during what should have been a recreational outing.
