Georgia Voters Make History as More Than 188,000 Cast Ballots on First Day of Early Voting

ATLANTA, GA — Georgia voters are making their voices heard ahead of the November midterm elections, with record-breaking participation reported during the first day of early voting.

According to the Georgia Secretary of State’s Office, more than 188,600 residents cast their ballots in person on the opening day of early voting for the 2026 election.

The turnout represents a roughly 40% increase compared with the first day of early voting during the 2022 midterm election, when approximately 135,000 people voted in person.

Election officials also reported more than 10,000 accepted absentee ballots, bringing total early participation to nearly 200,000 voters.

The surge comes as Georgia continues to be one of the nation’s most closely watched political battlegrounds, with important statewide and congressional races drawing attention.

This election cycle also introduces an additional verification procedure at polling locations. After checking in voters electronically, election workers must record their names on a numbered paper list.

State officials say the additional step is intended to strengthen election recordkeeping.

Despite the change, voters interviewed during the opening day generally reported that the process moved smoothly.

Election officials are encouraging residents to review their registration information, confirm polling locations, and become familiar with voting deadlines.

Important Georgia voting dates:

  • October 23: Deadline to request an absentee ballot.

  • October 30: Last day of early in-person voting.

  • November 3: Election Day.

Residents can check voting locations, schedules, and registration details through Georgia’s official My Voter Page.

The strong opening-day turnout suggests that voter participation could remain a major storyline as Georgia approaches Election Day.
