Drivers across metro Atlanta are finally getting relief after a major stretch of Interstate 285 reopened early Monday morning following a weekend-long shutdown tied to a massive reconstruction project on the city’s west side.
According to the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), all lanes between Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and Cascade Road were closed beginning Friday night as crews worked on rebuilding aging pavement along the heavily traveled corridor. Officials say southbound lanes reopened slightly ahead of schedule, while northbound lanes reopened around the planned 5 a.m. Monday deadline. ([WSB-TV Channel 2 – Atlanta][1])
The closure is part of GDOT’s larger $370 million westside I-285 overhaul project, which is expected to continue over the next three years. The interstate section, originally built in the late 1960s, has suffered decades of wear from heavy traffic and freight use. ([WSB-TV Channel 2 – Atlanta][1])
Construction crews are expected to upgrade roadway conditions with new pavement, improved drainage systems, barrier walls, guardrails, and overhead signage. GDOT says the temporary full closures are designed to speed up the overall timeline, cutting the project duration from six years down to three. ([WSB-TV Channel 2 – Atlanta][1])
While many drivers reported smoother-than-expected detours during the shutdown, local businesses near the construction zone say the closure slowed customer traffic throughout the weekend. Officials are warning Atlantans to prepare for additional closures and traffic disruptions as the long-term rebuild continues. ([WSB-TV Channel 2 – Atlanta][1])
