The upcoming murder trial of Dallas rapper Yella Beezy is drawing attention beyond the allegations themselves, as prosecutors seek to use some of his music as evidence in the case involving the 2020 killing of fellow rapper Mo3.
Yella Beezy, whose legal name is Markies Deandre Conway, has pleaded not guilty to a capital murder charge. Prosecutors allege that he arranged Mo3’s killing in exchange for payment. During pretrial proceedings, the state argued that lyrics from several of Beezy’s songs could support its murder-for-hire theory. His defense maintains that the lyrics are artistic expression and storytelling rather than literal admissions of criminal activity.
The dispute has once again raised a larger debate surrounding the use of rap music in criminal cases. An expert who testified during the proceedings argued that rappers often use fictional characters, exaggeration and creative storytelling in their music, warning that jurors could incorrectly interpret lyrics as autobiographical. Investigators, however, contend that the specific lyrics should be considered alongside other evidence in the case.
The issue mirrors similar debates that have surfaced in other high-profile cases involving hip-hop artists, with critics arguing that rap lyrics can be treated differently from creative works in other music genres.
Yella Beezy’s jury trial is currently scheduled to begin August 24, 2026, following additional proceedings over what evidence will ultimately be presented to jurors. If convicted of capital murder, he could face severe penalties under Texas law.
