ATLANTA, GA — One of Atlanta’s most legendary hip-hop groups is involved in a new legal dispute centered around its iconic name.
Outkast, the Grammy-winning duo of André 3000 and Big Boi, has filed a lawsuit involving rapper Ovrkast, according to court documents reported by 11Alive.
The dispute centers on the similarity between the names “Outkast” and “Ovrkast.” According to the lawsuit, the sides previously reached an agreement involving changes to the rapper’s professional name, but Outkast alleges those terms were not followed.
The case is particularly significant because the Outkast name has been associated with Atlanta hip-hop for more than three decades.
André 3000 and Big Boi emerged from Atlanta in the early 1990s and went on to become one of the most commercially successful and critically recognized groups in hip-hop history. Their catalog includes landmark albums such as ATLiens, Aquemini, Stankonia and Speakerboxxx/The Love Below.
The lawsuit now puts the protection of that well-established brand at the center of a legal battle involving a newer generation of artists.
The case remains ongoing, meaning the allegations have not yet resulted in a final court determination.
