Perry inspires Emory graduates through ‘commitment and sacrificing’ in commencement speech

Tyler Perry had words of encouragement to the latest class at Emory university.

Perry was selected as this year’s commencement speaker and told Monday’s graduates to be patient because success may not come right away.

“I know you are excited to go out into the world but as your commencement speaker I hope that I can help you prepare for what’s beyond your college years and the reality is success to most does not come quickly. Most dreams do not appear in your life without hard work struggle and sacrifice,” Perry said. “It took an insane work ethic for me to get here. It took time and commitment and sacrificing.” In addition to the address, Emory gave Perry an honorary doctorate as well.

Perry moved to Atlanta in the 90s. Perry said he struggled and ended up homeless living along Sylvan Road. After years of dedication, Perry finally saw his big break and now he is one of the top entertainers in the world.

It’s not just his success story in the entertainment that people have come to admire. Perry is also known for making charitable contributions to metro Atlanta and around the world.

It’s not uncommon for Perry to personally call the WSB-TV Newsroom after a story airs on Channel 2 Action News about a person or family going through a rough time. He then offers a very generous donation to help the person in need. This has happened countless times over the years.
