Water service was restored to the city of Atlanta Monday afternoon though a boil water advisory remains in place after an issue at a water treatment plant and pumping station disrupted service.

The city’s Department of Watershed Management said they are waiting for water analysis results before lifting the advisory. Residents are advised to boil water before consuming it or using it for cooking.

The outage affected the state Capitol and much of the downtown Atlanta area, including numerous schools. The schools will be serving bottled water and prepackaged meals to students today, sources reported.

The advisory also covers portions of DeKalb County, Georgia covered served by Watershed Management.

Under the boil order, residents are advised to:

Drink bottled water if possible

Bring tap water to a rolling boil for one minute when cooking or preparing drinks

Wash all fruits and vegetables with boiled or bottled water; use bottled or boiled water when mixing with baby formula

Don’t use ice from ice trays, ice dispensers or ice makers

Don’t brush your teeth with tap water or give it to your pets

Don’t rely on water filters which do not remove bacteria

Do not use tap water if you have open wounds, blisters/sores, have a weakened immune system or are suffering from a chronic illness.
