FULTON COUNTY, Ga. – A jail inmate was caught using a key to open up cells of other inmates. Now, officials have launched an investigation to find out how the inmate got hold of the key.

“I’m hoping that it was just a human error, as opposed to someone deliberately allowing an inmate to get ahold of one of the keys,” Lt. Colonel Adam Lee III said.

Lee is the assistant chief over the Fulton County Jail.

He said a couple weeks ago, one of the cell keys that should only be in the hands of detention officers was in one of the inmate’s hands.

“We do know that it was reported and then there was some investigation done,” Lee said.

Lee launched a much more in-depth investigation because, even though no one was hurt, they could have been.

“If you have a person opening a door for someone to let them out and that’s someone they intend to do harm to then that could be a problem,” Lee said.

Jail officials were already in the process of installing a new key management system that will help monitor where the cell door keys are at all times.

In light of the recent incident, Lee is pushing to get the new system up and running as soon as possible.

“It’s (going to) create a more safe environment for us and we won’t have to be concerned about missing keys anymore,” Lee said.

Lee said he thinks the new system will be in place in the next three weeks, and he said once things are settled, there won’t be any more missing keys at the jail.
