“IT’S A BIRD, IT’S A PLANE, IT’S A…WAIT, IS THAT AN ASTEROID?!?!”

NASA has officially issued an alert that a somewhat  “potentially hazardous asteroid” is on a very “close approach” to Earth. The asteroid is 525 feet tall and between 230- 524 feet wide in diameter, which is taller than the Great Pyramid of Giza. This gigantic space rock goes by the name of asteroid 2016 NF23 and is scheduled to zoom past Earth on Aug 29 at approximately 20,000 miles per hour.

According to NASA, this is the third largest near-Earth object (NEO) that makes its debut prior to two other NEO’s which flew past Earth in September 2001 and 2015. NEO’s regularly fly pass the planet, although NASA determines these space rocks to be “potentially hazardous objects” when the object is less than 5 million miles. Any object that comes within at least 4.6 million miles of our beautiful planet and greater than 500 feet is deemed potentially hazardous.
