Amandla Stenberg reveals she dropped out of Black Panther auditions to give dark-skinned actresses time to shine.
Amandla was almost casted as the technological savvy little sister of T’Challa, Shuri. She explains ““I was in the audition process for it, then i decided to not continue with the process because i thought that it wouldn’t be right for me as a biracial, light-skinned American to be playing the role.” The Hunger Games actress said she felt her look wouldn’t be a good fit for the project, which is being celebrated and reconigized for it representation of dark skinned women.
“I don’t think visually it [would’ve] make sense and it wasn’t appropriate for me to go after that role,” she added. She continues to say “Black Panther is one of the only films we have that has darker-skinned representation. That what was so beautiful about it.”
