WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

An elementary school in Cobb County dress up activity at the conclusion of its studies on the civil war took a turn after a parent complained about a comment that her son was received by one of the students. At Big Shanty Elementary School, fifth grade students participated in dressing up as if they were in the civil war. The activity took place back in September when students were learning about the Civil War. One of the students mother was not satisfied with this activity especially after her son coming home and telling his mother he was called a slave. Corrie Davis has been looking for some resolution since the situation at her son school.

Davis said “Towards the end of school break last week, my son walked over and said, ‘mom, something happened at school.” Davis was a little nervous once her son told her something had happened at school. Davis son told her how one of his friends who appears to be white said he was dressed as a plantation owner. Davis son who is African American asked his friend why he was dress that way and his response was, “We had to dress up so I’m a plantation owner and you’re my slave.” According to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Davis has asked the school to not “host a dress up activity that is oppressive.”
