1940 LYNCHING WAS A HARD TIME FOR THE BLACK COMMUNITY, POLICE CHIEF WANTS TO APOLOGIZE !
It’s been over a long time since a furnished group of white men grabbed Austin Callaway from the LaGrange city imprison, drove through obscurity to a nation street and killed him with discharges to the head, arms and hands.
There was no push to recognize his executioners, no criminal examination and no exchange by city police about their complicity in the lynching of the youthful African-American man. Generally, Callaway’s demise was scoured from the city record.
However like such a large number of different demonstrations of racial dread over the South, his rough end lived in the aggregate memory of the nearby dark group and added to its doubt of police. Presently the city’s police boss is prepared to offer an open expression of remorse for his office’s part in the 1940 lynching – an exceptional confirmation that is accepted to be among the first of its kind.
The chief ‘s words and remarks will take place at a ceremony of remembrance Thursday evening that will include the city’s mayor, local NAACP, the president of LaGrange College and Callaway’s descendants.
