BILL NUNN OTHERWISE KNOWN AS RADIO RAHEEM IN THE SPIKE LEE JOINT, “DO THE RIGHT THING” DIES AT AGE 63
His wife Donna, tells the media that he died from cancer.
The first major role for Mr. Nunn, was in the 1988 film “School Daze,” another film written and directed by Spike Lee. The following year, “Do the Right Thing” came after. This was the role that gave him the opportunity to serve as a symbolic platform in the Black community as Radio Raheem. In the film he carries a boombox blaring Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power” through the streets of the Bedford-Stuyvesant Brooklyn area on one of the hottest days of the summer.
Radio Raheem acts as the heart of the film, a symbolic reference of the morality and pain behind the struggle of Blacks within there community, delivering a soliloquy directly about the battle between love and hate. It symbolized the pain of struggle of everyday living of Black people as well as the issues of police brutality by the four-finger rings he wore on each hand. The character’s unexpectd death at the hands of police officers in front of a crowd of his neighbors closes out the film.
