OVER 20,000 PEOPLE GATHERED FOR THE GRAND OPENING OF THE SMITHSONIAN MUSEUM
“The National Museum of African American History and Culture” is the newest Smithsonian museum that opened to the public this past weekend in Washington, D.C., on Saturday morning.
As one of the most anticipated museum openings in D.C. history, all 28,500 tickets for the Sept. 24th opening day of the “National Museum of African American History and Culture” were sold in less than an hour after being made available on Aug. 27, 2016. President Barack Obama participated in the opening ceremony, as well over 20,000 people in attendance with a three-day festival of African American culture on the National Mall.
In recent comments honoring the museum opening , Obama referenced police brutality cases involving African Americans.”My hope is that as people are seeing what’s happened in Tulsa or Charlotte on television …I understand. I sympathize. I empathize. I can see why folks might feel angry, and I wanna be part of the solution.”
Some of the celebs that attended of course the Obamas, both President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama, members of Congress, the Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. (chancellor of the Smithsonian), Rep. John Lewis, D-Georgia (veteran of the civil rights movement in the 1960s), as well as musicians including Living Color, Public Enemy, The Roots and several more.
The museum was funded from more than $273 million contributed from private donors, including Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan and Bill and Melinda Gates.
