ATLANTA, GA — Two of Atlanta’s most prestigious historically Black colleges are joining forces on a major development designed to expand affordable housing opportunities for students.
Morehouse College and Spelman College have broken ground on a $147 million student housing project in Atlanta’s West End neighborhood.
The development, known as The Den at 850 West, is expected to accommodate nearly 800 students attending institutions within the Atlanta University Center.
The project represents a significant investment in student housing as colleges across the country continue addressing rising living expenses and limited residential availability.
The apartment-style complex will include modern amenities such as air conditioning, study spaces, and shared lounges intended to support students’ academic and social experiences.
Atlanta-based C.D. Moody Construction Company is overseeing construction, further connecting the development to the local business community.
The project is being developed through a partnership involving Morehouse, Spelman, and the City of Atlanta.
Beyond providing additional residential space, the development could help reduce housing challenges for students who want to remain close to campus.
The groundbreaking also reflects continued investment in Atlanta’s historic West End, an area closely connected to the city’s educational and cultural identity.
For Morehouse and Spelman, the project represents another step toward strengthening the student experience while supporting the long-term growth of the Atlanta University Center.
