FRANKLIN COUNTY, GA — A major new Walmart development is bringing a significant economic boost to northeast Georgia, with the retailer planning a $1.3 billion fulfillment center expected to create approximately 1,000 jobs.
The new facility is planned for Franklin County and is expected to become a major part of Walmart’s growing distribution and e-commerce network. The project is scheduled to begin operations by late 2026.
Fulfillment centers play an important role in Walmart’s supply chain by helping process, package and ship online orders to customers. The facilities combine employees with automation and other technology to move products efficiently through the company’s distribution system.
The roughly 1,000 new positions expected from the Georgia project represent a major employment opportunity for the region. Walmart says its distribution and fulfillment center positions nationally currently have an hourly pay range of approximately $17.85 to $40.40, although actual compensation varies depending on the job and location.
Walmart has also emphasized career advancement within its supply-chain operations. The company says many leadership employees have moved up from frontline and operational positions, while technology, automation and data are playing increasingly important roles throughout its distribution network.
Beyond the new jobs, a $1.3 billion investment of this size could have a broader economic impact on Franklin County and surrounding northeast Georgia communities as the facility prepares to begin operations.
The project adds Georgia to Walmart’s continuing efforts to expand and modernize the infrastructure supporting its stores and rapidly growing online business.
With construction and development moving toward a planned late-2026 opening, the Franklin County fulfillment center is positioned to become a significant new employer in the region and one of Walmart’s major investments in Georgia.
