Atlanta-based HBCU Spelman College has been awarded a remarkable $38 million gift from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott — a fully unrestricted donation allowing the institution to allocate funds where most needed. FOX 5 Atlanta
The college announced that the contribution will support two major strategic priorities: expanding financial aid and upgrading technology infrastructure. FOX 5 Atlanta
Spelman’s Interim President, Rosalind “Roz” Brewer, praised Scott’s generosity: “The flexibility of this gift allows us to move more swiftly to strengthen the entire student experience, modernize our technology infrastructure, and expand financial opportunity for scholars who call Spelman home.” FOX 5 Atlanta
This is the second major contribution Scott has made to Spelman — in 2020, she donated $20 million, which was directed toward scholarships and the institution’s endowment. FOX 5 Atlanta
As one of the largest gifts in the school’s history, this donation underscores the growing role of large‐scale private philanthropy in higher education and the importance of flexible funding in driving institutional change.
