As Georgians celebrate Juneteenth on Friday, June 19, many government offices, banks, and federal services will be closed in observance of the federal holiday. Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and has been recognized as a federal holiday since 2021. The holiday marks June 19, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Texas were informed of their freedom, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.
Residents should expect closures at federal offices, post offices, courts, and most government agencies throughout Georgia. Major banks, including Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and Chase, will also be closed for the day, while the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will suspend trading in observance of the holiday. USPS mail delivery will not operate, and many public libraries and municipal offices may also be closed or operating on modified schedules.
Despite the holiday, most major retailers, grocery stores, restaurants, and shopping centers are expected to remain open. Stores such as Walmart, Target, Costco, Kroger, CVS, Starbucks, and many fast-food chains plan to operate under normal business hours, although customers are encouraged to verify hours with individual locations. Across Georgia, Juneteenth celebrations, festivals, parades, and community events are taking place throughout the day as residents honor Black history, freedom, and cultural heritage.
