A Winter Storm Watch has been expanded to include numerous Metro Atlanta counties as the region prepares for a significant winter weather event this weekend, bringing the likelihood of accumulating snow and hazardous travel conditions.
The National Weather Service has issued the watch in effect from Friday night through Sunday morning for a wide area that now includes Atlanta’s surrounding counties such as Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, Gwinnett, Clayton and many others — extending into northeast Georgia as well.
Forecasters say this system is primarily expected to bring snow, not freezing rain, unlike some previous events, with total snowfall estimates of about 1–3 inches in the watch area — generally higher in eastern parts of the region and lesser amounts to the west. The very cold air mass accompanying the storm means even light moisture could stick and accumulate on roads, increasing travel risks.
Meteorologists emphasize that a Winter Storm Watch signals favorable conditions for a winter storm to develop within the next 12–48 hours, and updates are likely as the timing and intensity of the system become clearer.
Residents are encouraged to monitor forecasts, prepare for potentially slick conditions, and adjust travel plans if necessary as this weekend’s storm approaches.
