Exactly one-week from today, many of you will be heading to the polls to cast your ballot.
Georgia is expected to pass the 3 million mark today for people who have already cast their ballot early.
To put that into perspective, that’s three quarters of the total number of voters in the 2016 presidential election, 7 days before the election. But in a news conference this morning, Georgia’s Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger has a warning for voters voting absentee but haven’t yet mailed in their ballot: You should not rely on U.S. mail at this point. All the metro Atlanta counties have drop boxes located throughout the county where you can drop off your absentee ballot.
Raffensperger said it’s too risky at this point to rely on the mail. Remember, your ballot has to be received by Election Day, not just postmarked.
Half a million people who requested absentee ballots still haven’t sent them in.
“We need to get those to the county election officials,” Raffensperger said. “Be safe and be smart, while you can mail it, I don’t think that’s the best idea to secure your vote. There is simply a risk at this point of having the United States Post Office deliver your vote.”
Raffensperger’s staff told Channel 2′s Justin Gray that anyone who can use a drop box should, but if the voter is out of state or physically unable to get a drop box, today is it. The last day you can put in the mail and expect to arrive on time.
