The city of East Point is offering people a chance to waive fees in some court cases and restrict their arrest records.
From Jan. 27 to March 6, the city will be holding these ongoing amnesty events to help people through the criminal justice system. Kimberly Propst, East Point court administrator, said the Southside city of about 35,000 residents has been doing this for more than five years.
Propst said the financial penalty for the failure to appear citation will be waived during amnesty on traffic citations.
Though amnesty is specifically designed for traffic cases, if a person has a local ordinance, possession of marijuana, or shoplifting violation for which they have failed to appear they may also take advantage of this amnesty period,” Propst said.
Those interested in taking advantage of the offer can walk up to the window at the East Point Municipal Court, 2727 East Point St., from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.
“This is a final effort to help ticketed get back in good standing,” Propst said.
For those wanting to restrict their arrest record, only those arrested on non-violent crimes committed in East Point are eligible.
Those interested can download the application online and bring them to the court window from 8 a.m to noon on Feb. 1, Feb. 15 or Feb. 29. The fee is usually $25.
