The “woold balaclava jumper” is definitely out of pocket.
Gucci is issuing an apology sentiment over a “fleece balaclava jumper” which intently looks like blackface when worn up to the jaw. It wasn’t until internet users called attention to the uncanny likeness that it jumped out in resemblance to blackface that they were once again bordering on “racist imagery,” regardless of intention.
Social media’s successful intervention in the matter was supported by several high profile cosigns, the likes of which included Keisha Ka’oir, who tweeted, “Today Gucci released their Balaclava Knit Top. Sigh. Really Gucci? Really?” – herself a consumer of all things Gucci. Amongst the dissenters currently broaching the issue online, a good majority have even called for Gucci’s entire cancellation in 2019.
Gucci deeply apologizes for the offense caused by the wool balaclava jumper.
We consider diversity to be a fundamental value to be fully upheld, respected, and at the forefront of every decision we make.
