{STREETZ MORNING TAKEOVER} ATLANTA PASSES SCOOTER LAWS

NO MORE VROOM, VROOM, VROOM!

There is a new law in Atlanta regarding scooter riders, but no one seems completely happy about it.

The Atlanta City Council approved restrictions on where the vehicles can go and what age operators need to be to get on one

Members in person and via email got countless complaints about riders buzzing by pedestrians on city sidewalks. The vehicles can go up to 15 miles per hour.

Under the approved legislation, riders will have to leave the sidewalk and ride in the street. And a rider should be at least 18 years of age to use the scooter.

But that can be easily defeated by having someone else use a card to activate the vehicle.

Andre Dickens, who chairs the council transportation panel, says there is no good resolution to the concerns he has heard.

Ideally, the city would like the riders to ride only in the curbside bike lanes. The problem with that idea is there are too few streets that have the area for bikes.
