In light of the controversial Lifetime documentary about R. Kelly, “Surviving R. Kelly,” John Legend spoke out about being a part of the project, which premiered Thursday (January 3) and runs until January 5.
Legend wrote on Twitter, “We should all thank my friend @dreamhampton for her very necessary work to create #SurvivingRKelly. These survivors deserved to be lifted up and heard. I hope it gets them closer to some kind of justice.”
He added, “To everyone telling me how courageous I am for appearing in the doc, it didn’t feel risky at all. I believe these women and don’t give a f*** about protecting a serial child rapist. Easy decision.”
Legend is the only major performer to speak out against R. Kelly in the documentary, and Wendy Williams, Tom Joyner, and #MeToo founder Tarana Burke were also included in the documentary. Chance the Rapper also voiced regret in the documentary for working with R. Kelly in the past.
