Issa Rae and Ella Mae are serving us #BLACKGIRLMAGIC as they both sign deals with Sony
As we know, Issa has always talked about the diversity in her crew for her hit show ‘Insecure’ and how she wants to see more people of color, especially women, in the writers room. Because of her love and passion for changing the dynamic, Issa Rae found herself landing a deal with Columbia Pictures to promote diverse writers. Columbia is owned by Sony and they are known for backing female-leading and minority films. When asked about the partnership, Rae stated “Working with Bryan Smiley and Columbia Pictures to further the mission ColorCreative set out to achieve four years ago in creating access for underrepresented writers, has been a dream come true.”
The deal will run as a part mentorship program and studio diversity initiative where selected participants will have the opportunity to work with Rae and the studio to establish and write features based on their original ideas.
As for Ella, Sony/ATV Music announced on Wednesday (Dec. 12) that Ella Mai signed a worldwide publishing deal. Her self-titled debut album reached No. 5 on the Billboard 200 chart and The singer-songwriter’s hit song “Boo’d Up” was recently nominated for song of the year and best R&B song at the Grammys. The track peaked at No. 5 on the Hot 100 in July. She also set a record by remaining on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart for 16 weeks which was longer than any female artist in the chart’s history. Be on the lookout for Ella in 2019 as she will be touring internationally.
