Life expectancy in the U.S. is down due to the high number of young people overdosing on drugs and suicide rates among young people on the rise.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that there are 70,000 more deaths in 2017 than the previous year, with 2.8 million deaths total. Suicide rates were also the highest in 50 years with more than 47,000 in 2017.

The director of the CDC, Dr. Robert Redfield, commented on the situation, stating, “These sobering statistics are a wake-up call that we are losing too many Americans, too early and too often, to conditions that are preventable.”

Among the 10 leading causes of death, the cancer death rate fell, but there were an increase in seven others: suicide, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, flu/pneumonia, chronic lower respiratory diseases and unintentional injuries. The death rate for heart disease, the nation’s number one killer, has also stopped falling.
