Brett Kavanaugh now sits on the Supreme Court. Kavanaugh was sworn in during a private ceremony by Chief Justice John Roberts and he will replace, retired Justice Anthony Kennedy. The Supreme Court is now more conservative than it has been in generations. Progressive issues such as birth control and gay rights will now be subject to a Supreme Court.
President Donald Trump stated after the vote, “I stand before you today on the heels of a tremendous victory for our nation, our people and our beloved Constitution.”
Kavanaugh’s confirmation was controversy-filled with sexual assault allegations causing the vote to be postponed.
Christine Blasey Ford alleged that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her in the 1980s when they were teens. Her testimony on Capitol Hill last week increased the criticism, with liberals calling for an FBI investigation. They got what they asked for, although it was a very limited investigation that was more procedural than efficient.
The final vote was 50-48, falling almost entirely along party lines.
Sen. Joe Manchin was the only Democrat who voted in favor of Kavanaugh.
