Rachel Dolezal stepped down as head of Spokane, Washington’s NAACP chapter in 2015 after she was revealed to be a white woman posing as black, has been accused of stealing more than $8,000 in food and child care assistance.
She was ordered to turn herself in by Monday on charges of first-degree theft by welfare fraud, second-degree perjury and false verification for public assistance.
an investigation began after Dolezal, who legally changed her name to Nkechi Diallo in 2016, wrote a book about her controversial experiences seeing herself as “transracial.” Her publishing deal included payments of $10,000 to $20,000 as advances against later royalties, according to court documents.
At the time, she was reporting a monthly income of less than $500 at the time from child support payments. She said she had been unable to find work after her parents revealed she was white and she was forced to resign from the NAACP; she was also fired from a job teaching African studies at Eastern Washington University.
