If you missed President Trump’s first State of the Union address, you missed one of the longest State of the Union speeches in history, clocking in at 1 hour and 20 minutes, making it the third longest speech given by a US president. Bill Clinton holds the title twice for the longest State of the Union speech in 2000 and 1995.
Trump hit several topics during his speech, including policy, a call for bipartisanship, protecting American safety, surprise honorary guests, Russia, and more.
Trump called for the U.S. detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, to remain open, and promised to lower prescription drug costs. He also brought up the topic of infrastructure as something the Democratic and Republican parties could both work on. Trump mentioned that he will rebuild America’s nuclear weapons arsenal while cutting off foreign aid to countries who benefit of fit the similar beliefs as the United States.
When addressing bipartisanship Trump stated, “Tonight, I call upon on all of us to set aside our differences, to seek out common ground, and to summon the unity we need to deliver for the people. This is really the key. These are the people we were elected to serve.”
