Nearest Green’s story

Many whiskey drinkers appreciate the taste of Jack Daniel’s Tennessee formula, but an article published last year via NY Times dispelled that Daniel was the actual creator of the popular whiskey. The article noted that it was Nathan “Nearest” Green, a slave from the Lynchburg section of Tennessee who taught the alcohol’s namesake how to distill whiskey. The author who wrote about Green— Fawn Weaver brought the story to light, and now is getting Nathan Green the proper recognition that he deserves for his creation. Weaver took thousands of hours to do research on the originator of the whiskey’s formula and now has announced that the Nearest Green Foundation has been launched to honor the man’s impact and involvement in the Tennessee whiskey realm. Weaver issued a statement on the inspiration for the foundation, saying “he idea that there were positive stories out there of whites’ and blacks’ working side by side, through and beyond the Civil War, resonated with me. I liked the story of Jack Daniel, but Nearest Green’s story and the community at large really stayed with me.” The foundation has plans to work on projects like placing a museum in Lynchburg that documents the history of Tennessee whiskey, as well as create a scholarship fund to benefit the immediate descendants of Nearest Green
