A woman who felt inspired by how far she had come in life was murdered in her Florida home just hours after sharing her rags to riches story, early Thursday, June 29.

“I’m in awe of how far I’ve come,” Makeva Jenkins, 33, told friends through a Facebook post in which she opens up about going from being homeless in 2013 to earning six figures in 2015. “No matter what the road looked like, I followed my heart and stuck with it growing my business,” she’d add later on in the extensive message, before encouraging others to stay determined and consistent on the path to their goals.

Jenkins put the post up late Wednesday. At around 2 a.m. on Thursday morning a masked intruder reportedly knocked on the door of her Florida home and entered with force when she answered. An altercation ensued and Jenkins was fatally shot in the chest. The suspect then fled in the family’s car, according to the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s office.
