The Queens, N.Y. native thought she hit the jackpot but was told this instead…

A Queens, N.Y., unemployed mother of four thought her life had changed for the better while playing the slots.   Her short lived celebration ended abruptly, when casino owners told her that she was not a winner because the machine had malfunctioned.

Katrina Bookman of Queens, N.Y., was playing the slots at the Resorts World Casino when she hit the jackpot.  The machine printed a cash ticket for $42,949,672.76.  She was immediately surrounding by casino patrons and quickly escorted from the casino floor by staff members and told to come back the next day.  Upon her return she was told that what she had won was basically nothing.  When she asked, “What did I win?” She was told her winnings were $2.42 and was offered  steak dinner as a consolation.

The New York State Gaming Commission said the machine was removed for repairs after the incident.   Bookman contacted an attorney, Alan Ripka, who says she should at least be entitled to the machine’s maximum pay out of $6,500.
