NEW LEGISLATURE BLOCKING PUBLIC FROM POLICE VIDEO RECORDINGS SET TO BE EFFECTIVE OCT. 1, 2016

In what he claims is an “effort to balance public trust” with the rights of police officers, North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory signed off on legislation which will prohibit public access to footage obtained by police cameras.

In light of the recent fatal shooting of Keith Lamont Scott, protestors gathered to chant ‘No Tapes, No Peace’, urging the Charlotte-Mecklenburg to release footage of the incident. The chief of police eventually buckled under public pressure and released the tapes.

With tensions still running high in Charlotte, the new law set to go into effect on October 1st, 2016 seems to be making it’s debut at a time one could call less-than-ideal. However, despite public criticism of the legislature, Governor McCroy has stood by his decision, saying that it’s about “respecting the public, respecting the family, and also respecting the constitutional rights of the office”.
