HAS JUSTICE BEEN SERVED? STREETZ HAS THE DETAILS!

According to their lawyer, Sandra Bland’s family has settled their wrongful death lawsuit for $1.8 million. The conditions of the settlement were finalized on Wednesday night. Majority of the settlement will be paid by Waller County. The county has to fork over $1.8 million, and the Texas Department of Public Safety will pay the family $100,000. A number of procedures were also changed in the jails of Waller County, Texas as a result of the settlement. Requiring that a nurse or emergency medical technician is on-duty during all shifts and de-escalation training for state troopers are a few of them.

Social media went crazy when Sandra Bland died in her cell after being arrested for not using her turn signal in July 2015. The dash cam video that captured the tense encounter  between Bland and Brian Encinia quickly went viral. Bland’s death was initially determined to be a suicide despite the controversy surrounding it.

Geneva Reed-Veal, Sandra Bland’s mother, filed the federal wrongful death suit in August of 2015. She did not believe that her daughter would commit suicide and did not think Sandra should have been in jail in the first place. Veal stated that she felt that the settlement was “God’s justice” in an interview with The Daily Share. She wants this victory to give all of the mothers who have lost their children a voice.
